Imagine you come back home after a long tiring day and you just want to get off your screen and rejuvenate. You close the curtains, put on your music you vibe to and light your favorite candle.

A perfect end to a tiring day right?

But then you think about how people tell you that candles are bad for you and you look at the fluttering flame; if that is true, does something that instill a sense of relaxation and calm really bad for you?

The answer is not that plain simple, let us explain! There are some factors one must always consider before choosing your candle and understand a few fundamentals

  1. How do candles work?

Scented Candles are made of various types of waxes infused with different fragrances. When you burn the candle, the wick heats the wax and in turn the fragrance that emanates into the air.

  1. So is it the soot that’s harmful?

You have to understand that anything that burns, will produce carbon dioxide and other chemicals. But this majorly depends on the type of wax you use.

  1. Best wax to use

The typical cheap scented candle might be a great deal, but they are very harmful because they are made from Paraffin wax. Paraffin is a petroleum by-product and releases a harmful compound called Alkane which is even found in car exhausts!

That does not mean all types of candles do that! Using candles made from soy wax (made from soybeans), coconut wax and even beeswax eliminates this issue. These waxes are made from natural ingredients and hence do not produce such harmful gasses.

That is why at PAHAL,  we are switching to 100% soy wax candles

  1. Are all fragrances the same?

Not just the wax, but the fragrance quality also plays a key role. The candles you typically do not like might be giving you a mild headache and at times causes irritation in your throat, are the ones that use cheap fragrances that irritate your nasal cavity.

The best fragrant candles can come from using essential oils as their fragrant oils. While they are costly, choosing a natural and premium fragrance makes the difference!

  1. Being careful of allergic reactions

Some people may experience irritation or allergic reactions to the fragrance or chemicals released by scented candles, leading to symptoms like coughing, sneezing, or headaches.

So always understand that sometimes, some things might not be for you, the same person might also not be able to use perfumes. Avoid candles if you are allergic!

  1. Indoor Air Quality

As we said before, anything that burns, consumes oxygen and as fragrances are released in the air, it does affect air quality. This does not mean it’s harmful for you, just ensure that you use candles in a ventilated space as a thumb rule!

Even if you have your AC on, there’s a good amount of air flow to keep your indoor air quality healthy for you to enjoy the soothing scent of your favorite candle!

Summary:

  • Natural Scents can improve your home and work environment
  • Always use candles made from natural waxes like soy, beeswax and coconut wax.
  • Opt for candles made from more natural fragrances and essential oils
  • Always use candles in ventilated spaces
  • If any candles irritate your nasal or respiratory system, discontinue its use
